Well if I were a sailor, with a ship to carry me I'd seek out my adventure on the wide and open sea But every night I'd pray the winds to blow me back to thee No a sailor's life is not the life for me And if I were a travelling man, throughout the land I'd roam The open road ahead of me would be my only home But don't you just get weary when you're always moving on? No a travelling life is not the life for me And if I were a holy man, I'm sure I'd see the light And I'd praise the Lord Almighty in the morning, noon and night But the world is full of pleasures, and temptation's hard to fight No a holy life is not the life for me And if I were a wealthy man, with money in great store Well I swear I would be generous and never keep a score But I never met the rich man yet that didn't want for more No a life of wealth is not the life for me Now let music be an ocean that we may sail upon Let friendship be the open road, and I will ramble on And let my faith be love, and let my fortune be a song For a simple life is all the life, A simple life is all the life, A simple life is all the life I need

Black is the colour of my true love's hair Her lips are red as the rose so fair The sweetest smile, and the gentlest hands I love the ground whereon she stands I love my love, and well she knows That I love the ground whereon she goes And I hope that the day will surely come When she and I will be as one I went down to the river for to mourn and weep For satisfied I could not sleep And I wrote her a letter, just a few short lines And suffered death ten thousand times For black is the colour of my true love's hair Her lips are red as the rose so fair The sweetest smile, and the gentlest hands I love the ground whereon she stands I love the ground whereon she stands I love the ground whereon she stands

Slip Away 04:16
So many wonders in the world, so many things beneath the sun I could fill a hundred lifetimes through and feel like I had only just begun For every road we go, are many more we'll never know There's only so much time in every day But it's so easy just to hesitate, to simply sit and wait And watch the moments slip away So many moments make an hour, so many hours each day So many days in every year, how many years it's nobody's to say But how can we begin to measure something that is all too precious No man ever held it in his hand So easily it slips between the fingertips Just like so many grains of sand Now won't you slow down Old Man Time, why do you have to go so fast? Feel like I'm struggling far behind, got one foot dragging in the past Although in truth I know, you're never fast and never slow You plough your steady course without delay Which seems so cruel to this restless fool Who just can't help but linger on the way There's nowhere else I'd rather be than with you here and now But time is running out on me, I'd stop the clock if only I knew how So much to say to you, I always wanted to But waited for the moment to be right But time just carries on, so soon the moment's gone As sure as day turns into night So many roads to go, so many more I'll never know There's only so much time in every day Don't let it be our fate, we let it get too late And watch the moment slip away

The ending of the day We sit and drink the night away In the corner of the room The fiddle plays the sweetest tune And it seems like time slows down And out across this restless town A moment's peace descends In the silence- when the music ends Now let me hear you sing For the pleasure of remembering Simple joys and better days Friends and loved ones far away For those who've gone before And those we've loved but see no more Are with us once again In the silence- when the music ends And though it breaks my heart The time soon comes that we must part And though I long to stay This time I must be on my way And who knows where or when Our paths should chance to cross again Some other time and place But though I shall not see your face I'll hear your voice my friend In the silence- when the music ends
7.
There lived a lord in the north country (Oh the wind and rain) And he had daughters one, two, three (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) Now a young man came a-courting there (Oh the wind and rain) And he made his choice of the youngest fair (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) He gave the young girl a fine gold ring (Oh the wind and rain) He didn't give her sister a single thing (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) Oh sister let us both go out (Oh the wind and rain) To see those boats go sailing about (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) And as they walked down by the river's brim (Oh the wind and rain) The elder pushed the younger in (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) Oh sister won't you lend a hand (Oh the wind and rain) And you can have my house and land (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) I'll neither lend you hand nor glove (Oh the wind and rain) But I will have your own true love (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) It's down she sank and away she swam (Oh the wind and rain) She floated down to the miller's dam (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) Along the bank comes the miller's son (Oh the wind and rain) Says father there swims a girl or a swan (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) The miller came out with his long fish hook (Oh the wind and rain) And pulled the body from the brook (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) He laid her on the bank to dry (Oh the wind and rain) When a fiddler fair came passing by (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) He found the body lying there (Oh the wind and rain) And he made fiddle strings from her long brown hair (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) He made fiddle pegs from her finger bones (Oh the wind and rain) And from her arm he made a bow (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) And he made a fiddle from her breast bone (Oh the wind and rain) Whose sound would melt the heart of stone (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) Now he takes the fiddle, he takes the bow (Oh the wind and rain) He plays it fast he plays it slow (Oh the dreadful wind and rain) But the only tune that fiddle would play was Oh the wind and rain The only tune that fiddle would play was Oh the dreadful wind and rain Oh the dreadful wind and rain

Just For You 02:53
When you look up at the stars Though they seem so very far There's one shines for you For the sun goes up and down The world spins round and round Making time for you For you, just for you And I will sing a song just for you And if the world seems cold and grey Just remember there's a flame That burns for you And if you're feeling high and dry Just bide your time, don't cry The tide turns for you For you, just for you And I will sing a song just for you For the night turns into day And the long cold winter Turns to spring for you And as the day begins And the small birds start to sing Well they sing for you For you, just for you And they sing a song just for you Just for you And I will sing a song just for you
9.
I'll tell you baby how it's gonna be I'm a little fish and you're my deep blue sea You're the flower, I'm the honey bee And I just can't leave you alone We go together like the flame and the heat Like a pair of shoes and a pair of feet Feel like a little kid in a shop full of sweets 'Cos I just can't leave you alone I just can't help the way that I feel You know I need to have you by my side But this irresistible attraction's driving me to distraction I just can't be satisfied Like a hungry horse who ain't never full You got me burning up with the way you play it cool But I'm like a kitten with a ball of wool 'Cos I just can't leave you alone I just can't help the way that I feel You know I need to have you by my side But this irresistible attraction's driving me to distraction I just can't be satisfied Like the devil and a deadly sin Or a gambling man with a sure-fire win I'm like a drunkard with a bottle of gin 'Cos I just can't leave you, I just can't leave you , No I just can't leave you alone
10.
She said that she would dance with me said the young man with a sigh If I should bring a red rose, but it causes me to cry For there's no red rose in my garden, and I fear she'll pass me by No red rose in my garden and that I cannot mend I've studied the philosophy and wisest words of men But still upon this little thing my happiness depends The nightingale she heard him from her nest up in a tree And flew a little closer down this young man for to see Saying never was before my eyes a sight so sad as he And is this not the story I have long been singing of? On the cloudless summer nights up to the moon and stars above So I must find a rose for him that he may win his love But the first bush bore a rose as white as snows of winters cold The next bush roses yellow as the mermaid's hair of gold And last beneath the window ledge was a bush all withered up and old And she says oh withered rose-bush, won't you give me one red rose I'll sing for you the sweetest song that Earth or Heaven knows But I have no flower to give you since the winters frost my branches froze And if you'd have a rose from me there is but just one way And I dare not tell it to you for it's too terrible to say No tell me says the nightingale for I am not afraid You must build a rose from music, from your sweetest, saddest song When the moon shines on my branches you must sing the whole night long And you must stain it with heart's blood til your life becomes my own Young man, she sang, you'll have your flower, but swear you'll love her true For life is dear, but dearer still the love I see in you And as the night grew nearer- she knew what she must do She pressed her breast against a thorn and soon it pierced her skin And bitter pain run through her veins as she began to sing Of a young boy and a young maid, and love's first awakening She pressed a little harder, and the thorn went deep inside And as the pain grew sharper, the louder still she cried As she sang a song of passion, of a young man and his blushing bride The thorn went ever deeper and how the blood did flow The earth stood still to listen as she sung high and low And there upon the withered bush a rose began to grow Then the thorn it went right through her heart and little life was left Now softly sang the nightingale all with her final breath Of the love that is perfected- that does not fade with death And as the dawn was breaking, the nightingale lay dead The moon still lingered in the sky, a silver tear she shed And there upon the withered bush grew a rose of the deepest crimson red And the young man on awakening looks out and sees the rose With joy he greets the day for here's the cure for all his woes And he picks the flower and straight away to see his love he goes Crying love I bring the reddest rose that ever eyes did see So will you keep your promise now to dance the night with me For it's long time that I've waited, and no truer love could be Oh your red rose will not complement my dress of green and blue Besides another courts me he brings gold and jewels too And when did such a little flower cost dear as jewels do?

Farewell 03:46
12.
Now you don't have to count the petals to see the beauty in the rose And you can dive into the river and never know which way it flows And you can wish upon a star at night, and never know its name Reach your destination, never know the way you came And you can bite into the apple, no matter how it grew Sleep beneath the summer sky, whatever makes it blue And you can paint the perfect sunset and never think the world is round You can listen to the music, as it travels at the speed of sound But don't think your eyes are open, when your heart is so afraid That all the world would lose its magic if you saw how it was made Don't you let your fear overcome your curiosity For it seems as though the more you know, not less but greater grows the mystery And if there's a God up there in Heaven, do you think He always planned That we might scratch beneath the surface to see the workings of His hands For the more that we uncover what truly lies below The more we start to realise how little that it is we'll ever know And you don't have to count the petals to see the beauty in the rose You can dive into the river and never know which way it flows But there is wonder in the night sky though there's footprints on the moon And even when you know the score, there's simply no accounting for The beauty in the tune

about

Based in Oxford, England, Jon is a seasoned performer, playing with Magpie Lane, Kismet, The Powerfolk Quartet and more recently the Oxford Waits and The Big Dirty Canal Dance Band, while he has a long career of offstage activities behind the scenes as a producer, and educator of a generation of younger musicians.

Jon's solo output brings together and blurs the boundaries between the storytelling of traditional folk with the intimate, confessional style of the contemporary singer-songwriter. This collection of songs and tunes, both original and traditional, by turns light and playful and deliciously, deeply dark, touching on themes of love, separation, loss and above all, the transformative power of music. Recorded mostly live, the album captures an honesty and intensity that will melt the heart of stone.
